An Exercise for You: Create Your “Perfect” Life

Robert Terson

I often tell people that life will give you whatever you demand of it, that you can create a “perfect” (well, close to perfect, anyway) life for yourself. I believe that; I’ve seen it in action. This “retirement” career of mine is an example of what I’m talking about. When I retired in January 2010, I sat down and wrote out the “perfect” retirement life for myself—all the things I wanted to do, accomplish, a vision of what I’d be doing the rest of my existence. I added as much detail as I could. I even created a motto: “if it isn’t fun, I’m not doing it!”

You can do the same, and you don’t have to wait until your retired to do it. In fact, the younger you are, the better, because you’ll have more time to enjoy your “perfect” life. Why waste a minute, let alone years or—ugh!—decades. So here’s what I suggest you do:

Take out a pad of yellow legal (or work on your computer, whatever…) and first create a number of headings, such as Work Life; Love/Marriage Life; Spiritual Life; Educational Life; Great Goals, etc. Then under each heading start listing every item you can come up with that is important to you, everything that will encompass your “perfect” existence. What you want to be doing, accomplishing; whom you want to be part of your life; where you want to be; all the whys and hows. Fill in as much detail as you possibly can.

Next you take all that information and write out a plan of about 500 words, give or take; a narrative of the life you’re going to go after, make happen, including timeframes, and if applicable, monetary goals. The life you’re going to demand for yourself without compromise (Oh, you may decide to do some compromising along the way, but right now you’re mapping out nothing less than the “perfect” vision of the rest of your life).

At this point I’ll toss in my favorite quotation from an unknown source, because it’ll help keep you focused: “If you don’t have a dream that is so outrageous that you couldn’t possibly succeed unless God Himself puts in a personal appearance, you’re not alive.”

Trust me, you can do this! You can turn your life around, make it so every day of the rest of your time on this Earth is exciting, fun, joyful, rewarding beyond compare. You just have to want it enough, believe in yourself enough, and keep getting up when you fall short and are in need of a few adjustments.

So, are you ready?
